Use this Layer 1 switching system to add network backup and failover switching to your data networks. It's ideal for mission-critical applications, including classified information and military systems, broadcast networks, and stock exchanges.

With the Pro Switching System 1U NBS, it's very simple to switch all users from the main network to a backup network. Locally, this is done using a momentary toggle switch on the chassis' front or from a serial RS-232 workstation. But it also supports control from a remote workstation via its 10BASE-T Ethernet port. Through this TCP/IP connection, you can switch and monitor the system's circuits using Telnet, SNMP, or a Web browser link.

The switching system also features auto bypass and auto-recovery functions. If the "normal" network paths between the chassis and the device being monitored go down for any reason, the chassis will automatically switch from the normal connection state to the bypass, or failover, connection state.

This model switches all eight leads on the RJ-45 ports. It's designed for use in 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-TX Ethernet networks, for switching RS-232 circuits that use both data and hardware handshake leads, or any application that requires the use of more than four leads. (We also offer models that switch just Pins 1/2 and 3/6 of the RJ-45 connectors.)

Each switching circuit has a common (C) port that's latched to its associated A or B port, which means it passes signals even if the chassis is without AC power. Because its relays are physically latched into position, once a position is set, it stays set. The switch circuit is as reliable as the CATx cables connected to it.

A key-lockable switch secures the gang switching function. With the key-lock switch in the enabled position, all ports in the Pro Switching System 1U NBS can be simultaneously switched by pressing the momentary toggle switch on the chassis' front.

Port settings are also software controllable, so you can toggle a connected device from the A to the B position from a workstation. You not only have reliable network paths, but you can automate switching to control individual settings.

Need to add ports later? Simply daisy-chain multiple Pro Switching System 1U NBS chassis together - up to 255 in all - and control them as a single system.

    Network Switch Buying Guide

Connect Multiple Devices to a Network and Route Data to Designated Devices

What is a network switch and what does it do?

    NSUG24C2 ethernet switch

Are there different types of network switches?

There are two main types of network switches, unmanaged and managed. The essential difference is the capability to configure the operation of a managed switch to customize and optimize network traffic for specific applications.

    Unmanaged Switches

    Managed Switches

Where do you place network switches?

Network switches are usually placed on a desk or table, mounted on a wall, or mounted in a rack. CompSource offers unmanaged desktop switches (with metal or plastic housing) and both unmanaged and managed rack-mount switches with metal housing and a built-in PDU (Gigabit Ethernet Switch PDU Combos).

What is a Gigabit Ethernet Switch PDU Combo?

CompSource offers an exclusive line of unmanaged and managed Gigabit Ethernet switches that have Power over Ethernet (PoE).

    Factors to Consider

Does your application require a managed switch?

If your application involves controlling network traffic, you will need the features of a managed switch. The following are some examples of tasks that require a managed switch:

    • Controlling access between departments within your LAN
    • Running many bandwidth-intensive applications simultaneously
    • Giving important data greater priority in your LAN
    • Improving the performance of a busy network
    • Implementing VoIP, wireless LANs or other advanced services

How many devices do you need to connect to your network?

Make sure you select a switch with enough Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbps) Ethernet ports for the devices you want to connect to your network. If you think you'll add more devices in the future, choose a switch that will give your network room to grow.

how many devices do you need to connect to your network

Do you need to connect multiple network switches?

If you plan to connect multiple network switches, look for models with SFP uplink ports (also known as Mini-GBIC ports). SFP uplink ports are connection points for SFP (small form-factor pluggable) modules that allow the switch to uplink to other switches using optical fiber cabling.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) uses existing network cables to power connected devices, such as VoIP phones, wireless access points and surveillance cameras. If you need this functionality, look for a switch with Gigabit Ethernet ports that support PoE. Make sure the power per port (in watts) and the total power budget of the PoE ports meet the needs of your electronic devices.
